The following restrictions apply to all internship candidates:  

  • Applicants must be available for a non-negotiable start date of Wednesday May 7, 2025 in Calgary 

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older. 

  • Applicants must have housing accommodations or transportation in the Calgary area, as Precision does not provide internship housing.  

  • By May 5, 2025, applicants must have completed at least their first year of study in a post-secondary program/Technical Institute (see job posting).   

 
Summary  

The Drilling Optimization Machine Learning Developer Intern in Calgary, AB, will play a key role in creating an innovative machine learning solution that transforms operational data into unique identifiers while incorporating explainability for the Drilling Performance group.  

 

Responsibilities  

  • Gain hands-on experience to better understand and address the challenges in drilling operations  

  • Contribute to the design of ML/AI solutions that automate powerful predictive models and tasks 

  • Harness existing data infrastructure, pipelines, and tools to gather and analyze drilling performance data, uncover trends, and help create unique identifiers while incorporating explainability   

  • Leverage data engineering, data science, and ML/AI techniques to transform and elevate both structured and unstructured datasets from diverse sources 

  • Collaborate within a dynamic multidisciplinary team, thriving in a fast-paced environment 

  • Communicate both technical and non-technical issues clearly, in both verbal and written English 

  • Create reports and presentations and keep relevant technical documentation organized and up-to-date 

 

Knowledge & Skills  

Shows a strong passion for optimization and the development of ML/AI solutions, particularly in addressing challenges within the oil and gas industry   

Exhibits a willingness to learn and collaborate with others, supported by a strong analytical mindset and a talent for problem-solving 

Highly motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks and subprojects effectively

Education  

Pursuing a bachelor’s or have recently graduated from a master’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or Engineering, with a specialization in AI/ML. Previous internships, work experience, or extracurricular roles are an asset 

 

Experience  

Required: Python, SQL programming, Inferential Statistics, Machine Learning frameworks (e.g., Keras, PyTorch) and libraries (e.g., scikit-learn) 

Preferred: ML Flow, Azure technologies (Azure ML, DevOps, Data Lake), Snowflake cloud data warehouse, and data visualization tools (Streamlit, PowerBI, Spotfire, Grafana)
