Rostel Industries, a division of Precision Drilling Canada Limited Partnership, has an opening for a third or fourth-year Apprentice Machinist eager to roll up their sleeves and contribute to a lively work environment. This position will work out of Precision's Manufacturing Shop in Southeast Calgary.

Summary

At Rostel, the Apprentice Machinist will assist and learn alongside the Journeymen Machinist. They are tasked with setting up and operating precision metal cutting and grinding machines such as lathes, milling machines, and drills to make and repair products made from metals, such as oilfield rig machinery and mechanical equipment. They will work on advanced components and projects to further improve their knowledge and skill set.

 

Responsibilities

  • Machine rig equipment and mechanical components to precise engineering drawings and renderings using Alloy materials (4140,4145,4130, C1018, C1045) Plates (44W, 50W, QT100) Stainless (316, 304) Bronze (660) Aluminum, Polymers (Blue nylon, Black Nylon UHMW) and Structural Steel
  • Set up, operate, and maintain a variety of machine tools, including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as threading, sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding, and other operations
  • Use Computer Aided Designs (CAD) manufacturing applications to operate CNC machines
  • Operate Co-ordinate Measuring Machine Technology (CMM) for accurate measurements of workpieces
  • Verify dimensions of machined parts or tooling using micrometers, verniers, calipers, height gauges, optical comparators, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), or other specialized measuring instruments
  • Perform tasks utilizing the proper tooling specifications i.e., Tool Holding Devices, Milling Cutters, Cutting Tool Materials, and Tool Inserts and Holders
  • Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
  • Read and follow along with engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables in accordance with project requirements utilizing standard and angular measuring tools and dimension methods
  • Operate Power Tools, Hand Tools, Drilling Machines, Lathes, and maintain Machine Lubrication and Cutting fluids
  • Perform proper lifting, rigging, and hoisting techniques as outlined by industry safety standards
  • Utilize and apply a strong understanding of Trade Math
  • Assist with standard shop housekeeping and upkeep on an ad hoc basis

Experience with hand and power tools

Have a solid understanding of OHS regulations, WHMIS, and the importance of PPE on the worksite

API/Grant Prideco rotary shoulder connection experience is an asset

Familiarity with SPC (Statistical Process Control) and asset

 

Education

A high School Diploma or GED equivalent is required

Completion or in the process of completing the third or fourth period of vocational training from a post-secondary institution

 

Experience

Completion or in progress of completing the minimum 1560 on-the-job training hours

3+ years of experience working in a shop or manufacturing environment is preferred

Experience reading blueprints, diagrams, and Tables is an asset

Experience with oilfield, automotive, or aviation manufacturing in a service/jobber shop environment is an asset

CNC Lathe and Mill experience is required

Familiarity with Gibbs Cam software is a desirable asset
