Summary

The Journeyman Welder at Rostel is responsible for acting as the expert for fabricating, fitting, and repairing drilling rig components and mentoring welders completing their apprenticeship. The Journeyman Welder is expected to act as a liaison to the Lead Hand to ensure that all products and projects are produced and completed in a high-quality and efficient manner.

 

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications
  • Fabricating drilling rig components and equipment while maintaining quality and efficiency
  • Fitting and welding of structural components of a drilling rig
  • Repair/manufacture of drilling rigs/components by welding on extra layers
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxy-acetylene welding (OAW), resistance welding and submerged arc welding (SAW), Metal Cored Arc Welding (MCAW)
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment
  • Operate brazing and soldering equipment
  • Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears, and other metal straightening and bending machines
  • Complete proper project estimations and assist apprentices with pattern development
  • Assist with standard shop housekeeping and upkeep on an ad hoc basis
  • Must be willing to work in and participate in safety conscious environment
  • Must be motivated and have good communication skills
  • Candidate must have a positive attitude with the ability to work well with others and on their own
  • Produce quality products based on engineering drawings with minimal defects

 

Knowledge & Skills

Excellent attitude toward safety and demonstrated commitment to a safe work environment

Strong work ethic, self-motivated, and able to work independently as well as follow the direction of supervisors

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills

Willingness to train and mentor apprentices

Background in a service-oriented facility

Strong attention to detail

Have a solid understanding of OHS regulations, WHMIS, and the importance of PPE on the worksite

 

Education

A High School Education or GED equivalent is required

Completion of a three-year Welding apprenticeship program

 

Experience

Must hold Red Seal Journeyman Welding Certification

Completion of 54-month minimum on-site experience and 7,020 combined working hours

3+ years of experience in a fabrication capacity

B Pressure Ticket would be an asset

Experienced and competent with FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, fitting, all position welds

Experience with structural fabricating is an asset

Experience reading structural blueprints and welding symbols

Familiarity with industry codes (API, CWB, ASME, CSA)
